MOMENTUM feat. LES SAVY FAV

Incredibly long time no speak. We have been super busy with loads of gigs, and since we last spoke to you we’ve also launched a new clubnight called MOMENTUM in conjunction with our friends Song&Danse.

We now have some seriously exciting news. The next MOMENTUM has been announced – Friday 25th February 2011 will see us return to the Sound Bar for our second instalment and this time we have even bigger plans.

It’s Just Noise and Song&Danse are very pleased to announce our headliners…

LES SAVY FAV

Formed in 1995, after meeting at the Rhode Island School of Design, Les Savy Fav are considered among the godfathers of the independent rock music scene. One of the most important bands the US underground has throw up in years, Les Savy Fav specialize in brainy yet brawny punk rock and angular art rock with a refreshing pop polish.

Frontman Tim Harrington is known for his outrageous antics during live shows, and the group’s incendiary stage presence has earned them a huge fanatical following.

One of the most genre defining, influential and organically driven musical ensembles of the past decade – a truly unmissable live act.

TOP 5 IT’S JUST NOISE GIGS

Birmingham Promoters have asked me to pick the top 5 gigs we’ve ever done. Now, we all know picking favourites is wrong, but… I’m gonna do it anyway. Four years and a helluva lot of gigs later seems like an acceptable time as any to do a mini retrospective.

5. Knives + Kong + Corinthians + In Flight Program
@ The Magnet, Liverpool

This was our first ever gig, way back in April 2006. Looking back now I can hardly believe these bands were on the same line up. Four years on and Kong are the only band from the list that are still going. We’ve had them back since and they are now, quite frankly, brilliant. Currently being showered with a plethora of critical acclaim, their debut album ‘Snake Magnet’ is out on Brew Records.

Corinthians split in 2006, which is a shame as their ‘abrasive art pop’ was probably the best thing to ever come out of Wigan. Knives were one of my favourite Birmingham bands, and probably the reason I started doing gigs in the first place. Man, I miss that band.

With a rider that consisted solely of two litres of vodka and a crate of Red Bull, most of this evening is a blur, but I can say with 100% certainty that this was the most fun I’ve ever had at a gig.

4. Joan of Arc + Love of Everything + Planes Over People
@ The Garden (Rainbow Complex), Birmingham

This was definitely the most stressful gig we’ve ever done, but ultimately those kind of gigs are normally the most rewarding. The Garden was never really used for bands, so inevitably this show was a technical nightmare. I remember arriving and the PA or the mixing desk had just entirely stopped working. Luckily, the sound guy was also some kind of magician, and everything turned out alright in the end, despite the whole gig seeming like one calamity after another.

Joan of Arc were brilliant, and seeing how absolutely overwhelmed people were to be watching them made me realise this gig was definitely worth it, even if it did knock 5 years off my life through worry.

This gig also had a wicked poster designed by the wonderful Lewes Herriot, which I was most pleased about.

3. ZU + Beestung Lips + DAS BASTARD
@ The Rainbow, Birmingham

This gig was special for many reasons. It was DAS BASTARD‘s first gig. It was Beestung Lips‘ much-anticipated return from a break that seemed like it had lasted a lifetime. And Italian legends ZU were playing, who are awesome. The excitement was palpable, and all three bands delivered. I think this was also the first gig we did that sold out. Bonus.

2. Thee Oh Sees + Sex Beet + A Degree of Murder
@ The Basement, Birmingham

These last two gigs were at my favourite of all the venues we’ve used – The Basement. Sorely missed and disappointingly short-lived, this bar took up pretty much 90% of my life for the year it was open. Small, cool, grimy (you know, in a good way), rad jukebox – the atmosphere was great. I’m a big fan of Thee Oh Sees, so I suppose I was always going to love this gig, but they seemed particularly good on this occasion and I was made up with this show.

1. DAS BASTARD + Fuck Your Haircut
@ The Basement, Birmingham

This was the first gig we did at The Basement, and definitely my favourite one. Never before has my biggest stress of the evening been whether I was going to end up carting a band (and possibly some of the audience) to hospital due to self inflicted injuries. Did the singer really vomit on himself? Who knows. All I know is it was rammed and everyone was going mental. Wicked.

So there you have it. I hope that’s been self-indulgent enough for you. I would have liked to include the LITE, Part Chimp, and Barge Pole/Stinky Wizzleteat/Tad Allagash gigs, but I suppose eight gigs doesn’t really adhere to the rules of a top 5 favourite gigs list does it. Sorry to anyone I have missed out (but there had to be someone, right?), and as always big thanks to everyone that has played at, or attended, any of our gigs. It really is appreciated.

THEE OH SEES/THE BASEMENT

So, our last gig, Thee Oh Sees at The Basement, was absolutely awesome. Great band, great show, in our favourite Brum venue. With this in mind, I am absolutely gutted to announce…

Very VERY sad news… It’s Just Noise’s most favouritest Birmingham venue THE BASEMENT is closing down! Now it is the most badass joint in town, the landlord is tripling the rent, which is frankly ridiculous. From the 1st July until it closes its doors on the 18th, It’s Just Noise will be running a series of super cheap and super awesome events to celebrate just how bloody good it was. We know you feel the love too, so come join us and let’s drink the bar dry!

Below is the mailout from The Basement, with details of all the upcoming events:

Our Basement Brothers and Sisters,

It is with a heavy hearts filled to bursting with 12 whole months of fun that we must announce that The Basement will soon be shutting its doors for good. Sad faces all round, we know.

‘The Man’ has loved having us rent his unused, unwanted basement for ramshackle, packed out, rowdy, rowdy funtimes so much that when it came to renewing our lease he has more than tripled the yearly rent, to which we cannot rise. (Maybe they can turn it into another Subway?)

But fear not fellow underground movers and shakers! For from the 1st right on through to the 18th of July we are going to show Brum that we sure as shit know how to party! We urge you to join us and join us you must cus for 18 days we is gonna be hellbent on good times and loud times and very, very drunk times. Come and tell us how much you’ll miss us, there might be a drink in it for ya…….Let’s make us some memories!

Aimee & Raya and everyone at The Basement x

MARVIN, CRYSTAL ANTLERS, FUCK KNUCKLES

Word!

Two brilliant gigs coming up next week. First up we have MARVIN bringing their blistering, noisy and truly joyful math-prog-pop from Montpellier, France. The venue for this gig has changed, and it will now be at THE BASEMENT on TUES 4TH MAY. For fans of Lightning Bolt, Oxes and Trans Am. Support comes from THEO and MILLS & BOON, and its only a fiver on the door.
Facebook Event for that is here.

Next up, the day after, we have one of the biggest gigs we’ve done for a long time – Long Beach, CA’s CRYSTAL ANTLERS. These guys have been getting a tonne of amazing press for their latest release on Touch & Go as well as their live shows, so I reckon this gig is going to be something pretty special. You can witness their punk-ignited, psych-influenced, soul-fuelled garage rock on WED 5TH MAY at THE RAINBOW. Tickets for this are £7 advance, and they’re going fast so I recommend you pick them up quickly from the following places: WeGotTickets | TheTicketSellers | SeeTickets

And the Facebook Event for that is here.

In other news we have two upcoming gigs rescheduled. TV BUDDHAS have unfortunately had to cancel their UK tour due to a couple of dates falling through. This will gig will be rescheduled for November – more news when I have it. Also, the FUCK KNUCKLES gig has now been moved forward to a Friday night, so you have no excuse not to come! You can witness their disgustingly brutal two-piece dirge extravaganza (featuring anywhere between 6-10 amplifiers, the collection is currently growing daily!) on FRIDAY 14TH MAY at THE BASEMENT.

That’s all for now – hopefully see you next week at one of the gigs.
Cheers,
It’s Just Noise

DAS BASTARD, TV BUDDHAS, BOOKING

Here’s my last mailout (from Thursday). I should have put it up here at the time, but I didn’t because I’m a bit rubbish:

Hello hello!

LOADSSSS of stuff happening over the next couple of months. Here’s a quick round up…

DAS BASTARD + FUCK YOUR HAIRCUT
Tomorrow (Thursday) is the launch of live music nights at The Basement, as well as the start of Bank Holiday Weekend. To mark this momentous occasion, we have some awesome bands playing. Perfect.

DAS BASTARD will be playing their first local gig for ages, along with FUCK YOUR HAIRCUT, who are so hot right now. This will happen at The Basement on New Street (just off Victoria Square). MOTHERTRUCKER and MILLS & BOON will also be djing. The whole shebang kicks off at 8pm, and its only £2. And you probably have Friday off work. Brilliant.

LOCAL SUPPORTS
Just announced a couple of local supports for our upcoming shows. THEO will be playing the MARVIN show at The Flapper on the 4th May.

The following day we have CRYSTAL ANTLERS playing at The Rainbow. TEETH are no longer playing this show, as they have had to pull out of the entire tour. However, never fear as we now have VINNY AND THE CURSE supporting.

More supports to be announced very soon…

FUCK KNUCKLES & TV BUDDHAS
We are very excited to have just confirmed two new shows. First is the amazing TV BUDDHAS from Tel Aviv, Israel. Awesome rock ‘n’ roll at The Basement on 19th May.

Second is a new local show for FUCK KNUCKLES. Anyone who saw their last show will know this is not to be missed, and is likely to be one of the most terrifying live experiences of your life. This will be Thursday 20th May at The Basement also.

BOOKING
We have started booking shows for a couple of local artists. Current roster and dates are available on the Booking page.

MEGA EXCITING NEWS
Okay, so, I can’t actually tell you about this. But seriously. It is BIG. Hopefully I’ll be able to tell you the details on my next mailout.

That’s all for now.

Thanks for reading!

Gigs, GIGS, GIGZ. Fuck Knuckles, Crystal Antlers & TEETH

Good afternoon folks! Long time no speak.

Lots and lots of things happening at the IJN HQ at the moment.

TONIGHT
First and foremost we have the pressing issue of this evening. And what an evening its lined up to be! After absolutely destroying London last week at their first gig, FUCK KNUCKLES finally play their debut local show. Anyone who’s heard about last week will know this is going to be totally ridiculous, and you’d be a fool to miss it.

Plus it’s Valentines Day, and this is DEFINITELY the most romantic way to spend the day. Doors are 7.30pm ish, with the first band on around 8.15pm and its only 4 quid in.

TERA MELOS CANCELLED
Next, we have some bad news. TERA MELOS have decided to pull their entire Euro tour, so unfortunately our Birmingham show with them, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY & SHAPES is regretfully cancelled. Hopefully this can be rescheduled for later on in the year.

CRYSTAL ANTLERS TICKETS & SUPPORT CONFIRMED
Finally, we are very pleased to announce the wonderful CRYSTAL ANTLERS will be playing for us on Wed 5th May at The Rainbow. This band are famed for their incredible live shows, and their debut Touch & Go release has garnered them uniformly glowing reviews from Pitchfork, NME, Uncut, The Guardian and the like. This show is definitely going to be a special one, and I highly recommend you buy tickets in advance.

They’ve just gone on sale from: WeGotTickets, TheTicketSellers & SeeTickets

And as if this gig wasn’t good enough already, T E E T H (T ∑ ∑ T H/TEETH!!!/T3ETH) have been announced as tour support. Swish!

That’s all for today. See you later?!
